we'll definitely take your compost, R. Down the road we need to get DC to pick up compost, but in the meantime getting farmers markets to take it sounds like a good intermediate step.

We are fortunate in that the City of San Francisco picks up our compost and provides small bins and a box of BioBags for everyone. Now that we're composting and recycling it takes such a long time for our trash can to get full! Our kitchen rarely smells from the compost also. Enjoy, Riv!

Thanks, Linda! It really is amazing how much flavor can be extracted from leftover scraps...

That stand sounds perfect -- I wonder if the Dupont Circle market has such a thing. (I doubt it.) If you start, lemme know how it goes. I'm concerned about the smelly kitchen too, but my friends haven't had a problem.

Amy,
Thanks for de-lurking! It's always encouraging to hear about positive composting experiences. I think it's time I give this a shot.

I've been lurking for a while, but I had to chime in about composting! I have been experimenting with a bin in my kitchen for about 3 months now (I live in a small apt in Philadelphia), and it has been going really well. It is much easier than you think, and it just makes me feel a lot better about where my food scraps are going. You should definitely try it out and let us know how it goes!

I'm with you on the whole wanting to compost but having reservations. Apparently there's a stand at most NYC farmer's markets where you can drop of your stuff for compost, so I'm considering keeping a bag in the freezer for my compostable stuff (in the freezer so it won't stink up my kitchen) and schlepping it to the market once every other week or so. I really wish I had a garden I could really compost in, but for now I guess this is worth a try.

Brava to you for your awareness! We started collecting all the wastes from peels, stems, rinds etc. that we don't use and are constantly shocked at how much we produce. For just two of us, there's usually a good quart and sometimes two a day. Now, it goes back into the ground where we have our vegetable garden and helps fortify the earth and the crops. For city dwellers it's a real challenge and you have to be truly determined. I hope you friend ends up taking your stuff.
